In this post you will find a great guide for your TOEFL integrated essay. In this task, you will be required to read a passage and then listen to a lecture in the same topic. However, there is a twist. The lecture will always be opposing the reading passage. You will be asked to write an essay on how the lecture contradicts each of the reasons given by the reading without choosing a side or deciding who is right or wrong.
To do that, you also need a great structure and smooth transitions. Find the guidelines below:
INTRODUCTION
1st sentence: Present both sides (the reading and the lecture)
2nd sentence: One sentence about the reading’s stance (only the main idea which is usually found in the introduction paragraph)
3rd sentence: Show how the listening opposes it (you can write a sentence about the stance which opposes the reading by opposing each reason)
BODY PARAGRAPH:
1st sentence: One sentence about the reading’s reason. (You can add another sentence if you cannot include all the necessary information in only one sentence; the reason is always found in the topic sentence of the paragraph)
2nd sentence: Show that the listening disagrees (1. Include the reason/stance in the transition, 2. One sentence about its stance and then add to it in another sentence.)
If you chose 1:
3rd sentence: Since you showed the listening’s counterargument in the sentence before (transition), here you just continue to add more information about that counterargument.
If you chose 2:
3rd sentence: Show the listening’s counterargument.
4th sentence: Add this sentence by including supporting information from the listening
about the specific counterargument. (Remember to mention who says what)
CONCLUSION:
Conclude both sides from the reading and the lecture and show how they disagree with each other by not choosing a side.
