Overview of the TOEFL Writing Section

The TOEFL IBT Writing section is designed to assess your ability to write in English in an academic setting, and you must be able to arrange and convey your thoughts clearly.

There are two writing assignments:

- 20-minute integrated writing task: read a short passage and listen to a short lecture, then write a response to what you read and heard.

- 30-minute Independent writing task: write an essay in response to a writing prompt based on personal experience or viewpoint.

Your responses will be typed on a computer keyboard. To ensure fairness and quality, responses are transmitted to ETS, where they are rated using a combination of AI scoring and verified human raters.

You'll have 50 minutes to finish the writing section.

Integrated Writing Task

Three minutes will be given to you to read an article. Then you will listen to a lecture that lasts about 2 minutes. The same subject, but from a different perspective.

Take notes because the listening segment will only be heard once.

A question about the lecture and the article will be posed to you.

You will have 20 minutes to compose an essay; you will have the opportunity to review the reading passage during this period.

Although there is no word limit, a good response is between 150 and 225 words.

Your essay will be saved and the computer will move on to the next question.

Independent Writing Task

You will be asked for your opinion on a question.

You'll have 30 minutes to plan and compose your response to the question.

Although there is no word limit, an effective response should be at least 300 words long.

Your essay will be saved on the computer, and you will be able to finish the test.
