Overview of the TOEFL Listening Section

The TOEFL iBT Listening section assesses your ability to comprehend English conversations and lectures.

It measures your ability for:

- Basic comprehension,

- Pragmatic understanding (speaker's attitude and degree of assurance),

and linking and synthesizing information are all part of this process.

In the Speaking section, there are two sorts of listening items: lectures and conversations.

Both speak in terms that are common on college campuses:

3–4 lectures, each lasting 3–5 minutes and containing 6 questions.

2–3 conversations with 2 speakers, each lasting 3 minutes and containing 5 questions.

Throughout the test, you can take notes on any audio item to assist you in answering questions. You have between 41 and 57 minutes to finish this section (about 35 seconds per question).

Lectures typically run five minutes and include a wide range of subjects, including natural sciences, history, art, ethnography, business, economics, etc.

You will hear: "e.g. Listen to the following sample from a lecture in an introductory photography class," - before listening to the lecture.

Conversations normally last three to five minutes and are followed by a series of five questions.

Organization and detail questions are less frequent in conversations than in lectures, but you might expect more queries about attitude and function.

You will hear: "e.g. Listen to the a conversation between a student and a professor" - before listening to the lecture.
