In this post, I will be sharing with you some very helpful tips to help you with the TOEFL Writing section.
Let's dive in!
1. Take some good notes from the lecture and mainly focus on it (Integrated Task)
Remember, one sentence goes for the passage and 2-3 for the lecture.
2. Paraphrase all the time
Paraphrasing is something you will need to do all the time on both of your TOEFL essays.
3. Check your grammar and word choice
Make sure to leave time for revising where you check the structure and see if you have used the same word too many times. (If so, use synonymous language to fix it)
4. Make a great outline (Independent Task)
Before you start writing your essay, make sure you have an outline ready, so you know what you have to focus on in each paragraph.
5. CHECK THE TIMER!
You must check the timer all the time! The timer will help you adapt the time you use for each paragraph. Also, the second the time is up, whatever is written will be sent to the ETS center. Thus, you cannot change, correct any mistakes you may have made or anything else. That will be as considered your final response.
(Emergency Tip: If you couldn’t do well with the timer, make sure to go back and fix any misspelling or grammar issues you may have made and include a short conclusion. Even if you couldn’t write two strong body paragraphs, it will still save you some points.)
6. Use Templates
Templates are your best friends. Try checking them more often before your exam and practice using them all the time. Make sure to learn their structure and do not memorize them. They help giving your essay a well-structured format.
7. Avoid Run-On Sentences
Run-On sentences are usually very long sentences in which you try to put a lot of information together. For a better essay, while writing or revising, break long sentences into shorter, less complicated ones.
8. Use the Active Voice
Make sure that your statements are firm and clear. Use the active voice to do so.
9. Paragraph Unity
Make sure that each paragraph has similar word count. You must avoid having one long paragraph and a much shorter one. A paragraph should have a topic sentence, 2-3 sentences with examples and details and a thesis statement. Try to make paragraphs look similar with each other, but not with similar examples.
10. Use A LOT of transitional words
