5 Common Myths About TOEFL Exam - 2022

1. I should not correct myself if I make a mistake while speaking

It's usual for native speakers to make minor errors and correct them, and the ETS anticipates this on the TOEFL. Make rapid corrections to your errors. Simply state "I intended..." or "I mean..." For example: "I go hiking yesterday." Say: "I meant... I went hiking yesterday". On the TOEFL, this is permissible.

2. Even though I don't have time to study for the TOEFL, I am confident that I will pass

I understand that people have busy lives, but unless you are extremely lucky or live near a native speaker, I do not believe you will pass if you do not study. You must set aside time to study. This will have a long-term impact on your life.

3. My accent will affect my score

No, everybody who takes the TOEFL has a foreign accent. You must be understandable. This implies that the raters must understand you. ("Intelligible" and "intelligent" are not synonymous.)

4. There is a "list" of vocabulary words. I'll have all the terminology I need if I study them

English has the most words of any language on the planet. Unfortunately, no single list can possibly include all of the words you might encounter.

5. The TOEFL will not be costly. Using free materials allows me to save money

Everyone enjoys getting something for nothing! Me too! However, you must realize that you will need to spend money on resources in order to pass the test. Every day, I see people looking for free materials, requesting free classes, and requesting free PDFs. Don't worry, you'll make the money back once you start working (and much, much more.) However, just like with a degree, you will need to pay money on books and potentially a tutor. They frequently express regret for not purchasing books and investing in a tutor from the beginning! They eventually discover how much money they squandered by repeatedly paying for the test in order to "learn for free."
