5 Common Mistakes TOEFL Test Takers Should Avoid

Getting high scores in TOEFL isn't painless, but preparation is key to nailing it. Since the test is complex, making mistakes is easy while studying. There are several common mistakes that TOEFL test takers make, and as Warren Buffett said: "It's good to learn from your mistakes. It's better to learn from other people's mistakes". Here are some mistakes you should be mindful of when it comes to TOEFL.

1. Excessive anxiety before the test

Humans typically experience some anxiety before a test. Don't let your anxiety get the best of you, though. Overwhelming stress can hinder your performance. Plan your studies, take appropriate breaks, and eat meals on time. Try to complete your TOEFL test preparation at least a day in advance. It's better to save at least one day for leisure time.

2. Usage of unknown terms or complicated grammar

TOEFL tests your grammar and vocabulary. However, many test takers mistakenly believe that in the Speaking or Writing sections, using words that are challenging or complex will automatically boost their score. This isn't always the situation. When taking the test, many students use unfamiliar words or complicated grammar structures, which are meaningless. You will not be able to express yourself clearly and naturally if you use words or grammar structures you are unsure of. Use language that you are comfortable and familiar with.

3. Losing motivation during the test

Don't focus on a section of the TOEFL that you felt you performed poorly on. Don't let mistakes in one part affect the other. By having a positive attitude in other sections, you can make up for lost points.

4. Reading every word in the passage

You must keep in mind that the TOEFL is a timed test. Therefore, there are no points awarded for reading the entire passage slowly and clearly, word by word, as if it were a novel or story. Therefore, to get a sense of the subject, you only need to quickly scan and skim the provided text. There are numerous words and details that are useless. Exploring a word's meaning that isn't relevant to the questions is a waste of time.

5. Having the wrong strategy on test taking

While preparing for the TOEFL, work on taking notes quickly during the reading or listening section. Hence, you can answer the question correctly and find the test to be simple for you. All sections call for quick thinking, but the listening section in large part. You must quickly take notes because of time pressures. At Ivy Journey, we offer expert TOEFL preparatory courses.
